American Conservatory Theater

In 1965, theater director William Ball helped start the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ball was also instrumental in creating the Pittsburgh Playhouse and Carnegie Mellon University.

Ball’s vision of the ACT was as a theater company as well as an acting school. That vision has been realized. The conservatory offers a Master of Fine Arts and many other classes. Only eight of the hundreds of students who audition are admitted to the competitive MFA program. The ACT was listed as a top five actor training institution in U.S. News and World Report, mentioned in the same breath as Julliard and Carnegie Mellon.

Studio ACT, Young Conservatory and the Summer Training Congress are among the programs offered. On May 27, 1975, The ACT was named on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of the notable alumni that passed through the master’s program include Denzel Washington, Teri Hatcher, Nicolas Cage and Chris Pine.
